The Origin of Doerun

The City of Doerun, located in northwest Colquitt County, is rooted in rich agricultural heritage and strong community spirit. The city traces its beginnings to Reverend W. W. Williams, a Primitive Baptist minister who recognized the potential of the area’s fertile land and natural beauty. He became one of the first settlers and the leading founder of the community that would become Doerun.

The name “Doerun” reflects the local landscape. Early hunters described a small stream running through a stand of yellow pines as “a perfect doe run,” and the name remained. A post office was established in 1895, and the arrival of the Georgia Northern Railroad in 1898 spurred further growth. By 1900, Doerun was officially chartered, and the community elected its first mayor and council. That same year, the city opened its first school, added telegraph services, and welcomed its first banking institution.

From its beginnings as a one-house settlement in the woods, Doerun steadily developed into a thriving agricultural hub. Cotton gins, warehouses, and commercial buildings were constructed, and the local newspaper began publication. Despite the challenges of World War I and World War II, Doerun continued to grow and contributed more than its share of service members to the defense of our nation.

Today, Doerun is a community built on resilience, progress, and pride. The city supports a diverse mix of businesses, maintains a modern elementary school, and provides full municipal utility services—including electricity, natural gas, water, and sewer. More than a century after its founding, the spirit of Doerun is still moving forward — just as “the doe is still running.”
